This, the Institute's most prestigious award, is presented annually in memory of Massey University's first Chancellor, Dr John Clark Andrews, who proposed that a food technology degree course be established at Massey University. The award recognises Institute members who have made a substantial contribution to science and technology and leadership in the food industry.
Nominations are considered by the President’s Committee, which comprises the President and available immediate three Past-presidents. The Institute Council endorses the nomination “in committee”.
The winner is invited to give a keynote address on a topic of their choice at the NZIFST annual conference. The name of the winner is not made public until announced at the conference when an engraved plaque is presented and citation read. The address and citation are published in Food New Zealand journal.
In 1945, as President of the NZ Institute of Chemistry, Dr J C Andrews took as the theme for his Presidential Address the topic “Food and Food Technology” saying: “I hope the day is not far distant when a Chair in Food Technology can be established by the University of New Zealand. When one considers the importance of Foodstuffs in the national economy of New Zealand, it is a cause of wonder to me that such a Chair has not been established earlier.” He also said “There is a great need for more fundamental knowledge of foodstuffs which will bring in its train a new approach and radical alterations in the methods adopted for their preservation. If we have the will to apply ourselves to the task, not only can we assist in the solution of world food problems, but also improve our own diet.”
Dr Andrews was elected the first member of NZIFST at the May 1966 NZIFST AGM.
