KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

GILLIAN WRATT
Chief Executive Cawthron Institute
Prior to taking the reins as Chief Executive of Cawthron in early 2006, Gillian managed New Zealand’s Antarctic programme for ten years, as Chief Executive of Antarctica New Zealand. Antarctica New Zealand runs New Zealand’s Scott Base in Antarctica. She also chaired the international Antarctic Managers’ Forum – Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes, and was vice chair of the Antarctic Treaty Committee for Environmental Protection. In these roles Gillian was involved in a number of environmental initiatives. As NZ Antarctic Programme manager, Gillian worked closely with the US and Italian programmes who also have Antarctic bases south of New Zealand. Since leaving Antarctica New Zealand, Gillian has spent time lecturing and guiding on Antarctic tourist expeditions from South America and in 2004 she was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit (MNZM) award for services to Antarctica. Between her Antarctica New Zealand and Cawthron roles, Gillian worked for the Ministry for the Environment. Her main focus was negotiating environment agreements alongside New Zealand free trade agreements – with Chile, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, China and Malaysia. Gillian has a passion for the New Zealand environment, having spent a lot of time in/on kayaks, skis, mountain bike and boots.

CAROLINE SAUNDERS
Professor, Director of AERU, Lincoln University
Dr Caroline Saunders has 25 years research expertise in the UK and New Zealand. She has over 100 publications specialising on sustainable economic development. Her current research includes evaluating trade and the environment including assessment of international market policies and their impact on development. This includes developing and using the Lincoln Trade and Environment Model to assess impacts on trade of various factors including changing policy, market trends, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and the development of new technologies. She has undertaken research into such issues as food miles, and also for a wide range of private and public bodies both in NZ and overseas. These include the EU commission, MAF, MFAT, Treasury, MFE , MED, NZTE, Fonterra, Meat Industry and various other sector groups. She is on the National Science Panel and the Royal Society Council, and chairs the RSNZ Social Sciences committee.

PHILIP GREGAN
Chief Executive Officer, New Zealand Winegrowers
Philip Gregan is Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand Winegrowers, the organisation representing New Zealand’s 1,500 grape growers and winemakers. New Zealand Winegrowers has offices in New Zealand, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. Philip has been with wine industry organisations since 1983 and has had a leadership role in the wine industry since 1990. He has developed a particular focus on regulatory and international trade relations in the wine industry, and was a key player in the formation of the World Wine Trade Group.

NICK GODDARD
Corporate Relations and Communications Director for Unilever Australasia
As the Corporate Relations and Communications Director for Unilever Australasia, Nick has responsibility for both external and internal communication for the business. With more than 20 years experience in the Food industry, Nick has a passionate interest in food, and particularly in foods that deliver strong nutritional benefits. While in marketing, Nick was responsible for the introduction of the first canola oil products in Australia in the late 1980s, and the launch of the first plant sterol containing margarines in Australia and NZ. Nick is a director of the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA), and a member of the Public Affairs Committees of the Australian Food & Grocery Council, the Australian Beverage Council and ACCORD, the Consumer, Cosmetic, Hygiene and specialty products Industry Association. Nick also represents Unilever at the Australian Centre for Corporate Public Affairs. Nick is also on the board of the AANA and Learning Links, a not-for profit organisation working to assist children with learning difficulties, and their families.

NELSON GAPARE
Senior Advisor - Sector Sustainability (Agriculture, Food & Beverage Sector) Ministry for the Environment.
Nelson spent five years working for the Zimbabwe Forestry Commission Research Centre before moving to New Zealand in 1998. Prior to joining Ministry for the Environment, he worked for MAF Policy and AsureQuality (formerly AgriQuality) where he worked within the primary sector of food safety and biosecurity. During his time at AsureQuality, Nelson completed an MBA from Massey University. Nelson joined Ministry for the Environment in 2007 initially focusing on emerging markets trends in environmental sustainability. He currently looks after sustainability programmes in the food and beverage and agriculture sectors - particularly Dairy. Nelson's particular focus is to help businesses understand the inevitable opportunities, and risks from environmental sustainability. His is currently developing strategic guidelines for corporate sustainability placing emphasis on corporate strategy, culture and innovation as a basis for competitive advantage.

BARRY HARRIS
As Director of Fonterra’s Milk Supply division, Barry Harris oversees Fonterra’s relationship with shareholders and the efficient collection of over 14 billion litres of milk from around New Zealand every year. He also ensures Fonterra’s milk growth goals are achieved in a way that is profitable for farmers and sustainable for the environment.
Mr Harris has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Masters of Natural Resource Economics from Massey University and has completed the Stanford University Executive Management Programme. He was formerly Chief Executive of Greater Wellington Regional Council and Environment Waikato.
