Food Labelling Workshop

WORKSHOP CONTENT:
Brief overview of the content of the ANZ Food Standards Code (FSC).
Details on the 2010 Supplemented Food Standard (NZ)? How it fits in with the FSC, how it can be used, and implications for food going into Australia (i.e. TTMRA).
Practical exercises to develop labels from example formulations for foods / supplemented foods.
Discussion of common mistakes and misinterpretations for labels currently on the market.
Review of recommendations from the 2011 Blewett report (trans-Tasman review of food labelling) and how changes could affect the attendee's businesses.
Consideration of labelling compliance and enforcement issues and the impact on food industry.
Examination of labels provided by attendees - bring your labels to review for compliance.
PLUS - Opportunity for confidential feedback from the facilitators on labelling issues within the attendees' businesses
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is designed for anyone involved in the food industry who has a need for more information on their product labelling.
There are NO prerequisites other than a willingness to learn.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADERS: Margaret Brooker is the Manager (Labelling) in the Food Safety branch of MAF (formerly the New Zealand Food Safety Authority). Her background is in law and she began her career at NZFSA as a lawyer in the Compliance and Investigation group. She is also an award winning food writer and on the executive of the NZ Guild of Food Writers. Cathy McArdle is a food technologist and the owner of McFoodies Ltd, a consultancy that provides contract food technologists by the hour. Cathy has developed an overwhelming interest in food labelling and spends a large proportion of her time advising clients on how their labels could be designed to make them compliant within the various regulations in force in New Zealand. She is an advocate for the food industry and is constantly pushing for enforcement of these regulations to create a level playing field for the businesses that take this issue seriously.
